Motor vehicle crashes remain a leading cause of death among adolescents – second to gun violence – and there is a lot we as pediatricians can do to prevent them.  In this webinar, we will provide the latest research on the causes of young novice driver crashes and evidence-based strategies for preventing these crashes. We will focus on the role of the primary care practice in preparing teens and families for the period of highest risk – the months following receiving a license. Taking a preventative approach, with funding from NJM Insurance Group, in 2020 Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia launched a network-wide young driver safety program that includes universal identification of young drivers, a novel virtual driving assessment and personalized feedback. We will present our experience to date and strategies that practices can adopt to address not only reducing a major health issue but also improving transportation equity among our adolescents.

Objectives

At the conclusion of the activity, participants should be able to:

  • Describe teen drivers and why they are at a higher risk of crashing in the first year of licensure.
  • Describe how a large pediatric primary care network integrated teen driving resources into the adolescent well visit.
  • Demonstrate how to onboard a virtual driving assessment in a pediatric primary care setting.
