Anthony McGovern is an Occupational Therapist in Indianapolis at Riley Children’s Health, the Automotive Safety Program, and the National Center for the Safe Transportation of Children with Special Health Care Needs. He has been an Occupational Therapist for over 15 years working with children, adults, and older adults in outpatient, inpatient, long term care, transitional care, and home health settings. Currently, Anthony evaluates children for adaptive child restraints and any additional adaptive equipment needs. He also supports the National Center with inquiries, trainings, and all concerns related to safe transportation and adaptive child restraints.
Description:
Medical Professionals and CPSTs are challenged each day to assist passengers with complex transportation needs. Many can safely use conventional car seats. However, those with more complex needs may not be able to safely use the car seat they currently have. Information presented will provide participants with potential options to provide those passengers with more complex needs (infants to adults) the best and safest way to travel.
Objectives:
At the conclusion of the activity, participants should be able to:
- Identify conventional car seat options that may benefit children with complex needs.
- Identify adaptive car seat options that may benefit children with complex needs.
- Identify helpful local and national resources available.
