In this webinar we will use videos from laboratory crash testing to illustrate the importance of following wheelchair transportation safety best practices for students who do not transfer from their wheelchair to conventional vehicle seats.  We will cover the relevant crashworthiness standards developed by RESNA for hardware and wheelchair manufacturers. Proper methods to secure the wheelchair and fit the rider’s seat belt will be explained.  We will also talk about how to travel more safely with other devices that may travel with wheelchair users.  Finally, we will cover online resources where additional information on these topics can be found.

Objectives:

At the conclusion of the activity, participants:

  • Learn best practices for securing a wheelchair and protecting a wheelchair-seated occupant during travel.
  • Learn about relevant industry standards for crashworthiness of wheelchair tiedowns (WC18), wheelchairs (WC19) and wheelchair seating (WC20).
  • Learn strategies for dealing with extra items that travel with wheelchairs, like oxygen tanks, trays and other devices.
