Combi BabyRide Infant Car Seat

Recalls

Combi USA, Inc. (Combi) is recalling certain Combi BabyRide Infant car seats.

Recall Information

Combi USA, Inc. (Combi) is recalling certain Combi BabyRide Infant Car Seats, model 378099 with dates of manufacture of 5/1/2016 thru 8/31/2019. The 1-inch-wide webbing strap used in the center front adjuster to adjust the shoulder harness straps fail the minimum initial breaking strength requirements, and in certain circumstances, may not adequately restrain a child during a crash. As such, these car seats fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 213, “Child Restraint Systems.”

NHTSA Campaign Number: 21C001000

Potential Number of Units Affected: 13,880

Model name: BabyRide Infant Car Seat; Model Number 378099

Production Dates: May 1, 2016 – August 31, 2019

CONSEQUENCE:

Combi USA has determined that the 1-inch-wide webbing strap used in the center front adjuster to snugly adjust the shoulder harness straps onto the child is below the minimum initial breaking strength requirements as specified in FMVSS 213. If the webbing becomes frayed or worn, which can
reduce the strength of the webbing, the webbing could fail to properly restrain the occupant in the event of a vehicle crash.

Combi USA urges you to continue using the BabyRide Infant Car Seat after inspecting the 1-inch-wide webbing for any fraying or wear and check for proper locking of the harness adjuster after the harness is snugly adjusted. You can continue to use the BabyRide Infant Car Seat until the replacement 1-inch-wide webbing has been installed.

REMEDY:

  1. Combi will repair the noncomplying car seats by providing a retrofit kit to replace the center front adjuster strap. The retrofit kit will include a
new center front adjuster strap that meets all FMVSS 213 requirements and instructions on how to remove and replace the original center front
    adjuster strap.
  2. Combi will send an interim recall notice directly to all registered owners of the BabyRide Infant Car Seat. Combi USA will start sending interim
notices before October 20th , 2021 pending NHTSA approval of the draft notices being submitted. The recall notice will advise owners of the recall
and inform them that a retrofit kit will be sent to them free of charge when it becomes available, starting in January 2022.
    • Combi will send the retrofit kit with a cover letter directly to all registered owners of the BabyRide Infant Car Seat once the retrofit kit
      becomes available.
  3. All BabyRide Infant Car Seats were sold only to hospitals, medical centers, and child passenger safety groups including health services and
police departments. All shipments were made through a single distributor that Combi USA was working with. Combi USA will send a recall notice and poster announcing the recall to all hospitals, medical centers, and child passenger safety groups including health services and police departments. The recall notice will advise those organizations of the recall and request that the poster be posted in their office, NICU, and/or pediatric department and also ask that each organization contact the families that received a car seat through their organization, where possible. The recall poster will provide an e-mail address, U.S. mailing address, and Combi USA website address for consumers to contact Combi USA for a repair kit and leave their name, address, phone number (optional), and the model number and date of manufacture of the car seat.
  4. Combi will process each request received from owners of BabyRide ICS and send a retrofit kit to each requestor.
  5. Combi estimates that the replacement center front adjuster straps, printed instructions, and other materials will be available starting in January 2022. Once those materials are available, notices with retrofit repair kits will be sent directly to registered owners and will also be sent to other owners of the BabyRide Infant Car Seat that have requested a retrofit kit.
