Child Passenger Safety Week, September 15 – 21, 2019 highlights the safety benefit for children who are correctly secured in the right child restraint (rear-facing car seat, forward-facing car seat with a harness, belt-positioning booster seat or seat belt) appropriate for their child's age and size. The campaign is dedicated to helping parents and caregivers make sure their children ride as safely as possible – every trip, every time.
During Child Passenger Safety Week, many communities will have events to educate families on how to:
- Choose the correct car seat for their child;
- Install the car seat correctly in their vehicle; and
- Secure the child correctly during each ride.
Certified child passenger safety technicians are available at car seat check events to offer advice and instruction throughout Pennsylvania.
Every year, children are tragically injured or killed in car crashes. In fact, car crashes are a leading cause of death for children. On average, in 2017, two children under 13 years of age were killed every day while riding in cars, SUVs, pickups, and vans. While fatalities and injuries decreased in 2017 from 2016 – an eight percent decrease in fatalities and an estimated 19 percent decrease in injuries – there is still more work to be done to eliminate these preventable tragedies.
The PA Traffic Injury Prevention Project has developed a Child Passenger Safety Week planner to assist you in your efforts to educate families in your community. Child passenger safety materials are also available upon request. Help us to get the word out about car seat checks and educational efforts being conducted by registering your events through the link below. Do not forget to share the success of your event by completing the data collection form through the link below.
